American Veterans Center President, Jim Roberts issued the following statement:
“All of us at the American Veterans Center mourn the death of Monte Irvin, a great baseball player and a great American, who died today at age 96.”
An American treasure and an American legend, Monte Irvin witnessed history for almost a century and he made history. He was a star in the Negro Leagues for more than a decade and he helped make history as one of the first African Americans to help integrate the major leagues. Monte Irvin was also an American patriot who served in the Army during World War II and continued to serve in many charitable causes after his election to the Hall of Fame.
“At the American Veterans Center we were privileged to have Monte as a speaker on two occasions where he impressed the many students attending with his humor, his stories and advice.
“We were blessed to have known Monte Irvin. May he rest in peace.”

AVC had the pleasure of hosting Monte Irvin at the 2008 Veterans Day Conference. Check out his panel in the videos below as we continue to remember his legacy.
