Ten years ago today, February 27, 2011, America lost its last Doughboy as Frank W. Buckles – the last living American veteran of World War One – passed away at the age of 110 years old. Buckles joined the Army at the age of 16 in 1917, driving ambulances on the front lines of Europe and meeting General John J. Pershing. Working in the Philippines at the outbreak of World War II, Buckles was captured by the Japanese, spending three years as a civilian prisoner.

An American original, the AVC was honored to know ‘The Last Doughboy,’ welcoming him as a Grand Marshal in the National Memorial Day Parade prior to his passing. Here, he is photographed with veterans of every era, World War One through Afghanistan. An American soldier of The Great War. Rest In Peace.
