The Price of Freedom

Students from George Washington University traveled to Normandy in March 2016 to trace the footsteps of individual soldiers who fought in the Normandy campaign. After months researching soldiers who lost their lives, they delivered eulogies at the graves of fallen heroes – a moving and invaluable experience.

The trip is part of Professor Tom Long‘s class The Price of Freedom: Normandy, 1944. In this class students are assigned to conduct original research about a soldier buried in the American cemetery at Omaha Beach, and write a military biography which will be used for the eulogies. Megan Maggi, Content Manager and Producer at AVC and a Master’s student in history at GW, was among the students on the trip.

Students have described this class as “the most impactful class” they have ever taken. It helps ensure that the young people of today are aware the sacrifices made by our country’s Greatest Generation who served in the Second World War.
